Las Vegas, October 21, 2024 – Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, is unveiling its latest innovation at the 2024 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Las Vegas: a cutting-edge 28-volt lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery designed to deliver reliable backup power and high-performance engine starting for business jets and helicopters.

This new-generation battery is lighter, more compact, and boasts a significantly higher energy density, offering a sustainable alternative that supports reduced CO₂ emissions. Compared to conventional technologies, Saft’s lithium-ion battery delivers 20% more capacity and requires no maintenance—setting a new benchmark in aviation battery performance.

The innovative design enables over twice the energy storage at the same weight and 1.5 times more energy within the same volume than traditional lead-acid batteries. By adopting lithium-ion technology, aircraft can reduce total weight by 20 to 30 kilograms, translating into lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions.

“We bring extensive experience in lithium-ion solutions for aviation, including programs such as the Joint Strike Fighter (F-35) and other commercial aircraft,” said a Saft spokesperson. “This new battery embodies that expertise—delivering a safe, high-performance, and cost-effective alternative to legacy lead-acid systems that the aviation market has been anticipating.”

Engineered as a maintenance-free solution, the new battery is built on Saft’s proprietary cell chemistry and smart design. Each unit is equipped with integrated intelligence for real-time health monitoring and status updates. It also features an aerospace-grade MIL-Spec interface and a casing with built-in venting that meets DO-311A1 thermal runaway containment standards.

As one of the few manufacturers managing the entire battery lifecycle—from research and design to manufacturing—Saft ensures uncompromising safety, quality, and performance. The new 28V battery was developed at Saft’s R&D centers in Cockeysville, USA, and Bordeaux, France, and will be produced and qualified at one of Saft’s aviation-certified facilities.
